Originally from a coal-mining family in the Rhymney Valley, she became a graduate trainee at what was then Thomson Regional Newspapers and began her career as a junior reporter at the Glamorgan Gazette in Bridgend in the early 1980s. It was here she met her husband, Richard Williams, and they worked together before Amanda moved to the South Wales Argus in Newport and then became a journalist, producer and editor at BBC Cymru Wales.

After 30 years at BBC Cymru Wales, the last 16 of those as Editor of the news and then sport websites, Amanda returned to her roots in print, as a feature writer for the Western Mail Saturday Magazine.
