This is a story of childhood, set in a south Wales valley during the period 1939-45. The war affects everything, including the play of children, but as a worker in a munitions factory, Jac's older sister, Jo, brings its reality horribly close. She finds relief and release riding her pony on the open mountain above and beyond the pit village. Jac grows in awareness of the world beyond home and family. He makes first friends and joins them in play that imitates war and exploration of a landscape scarred by coal mining offering adventures and risks.
