Hafina Clwyd

Mair Hafina Clwyd Jones was born at Gwyddelwern, and raised on a farm at Llandyrnog. She attended Bangor Normal College and trained to be a teacher. At 21 she moved to London to work as a teacher. Whilst living in London she co-founded a Welsh literary club, and was an officer of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion. She was a prolific writer and a superb columnist. After returning to Wales in the late 1970s, she edited Y Bedol, the community newspaper for Ruthin as well as the national weekly newspaper, Y Faner. She was honoured as a member of the Eisteddfod Gorsedd in 1992 and as an honourary fellow by Bangor University in 2005 for her services to journalism. Hafina Clwyd published 11 books, mainly essay collections. She was on Rhuthun town council from 1999 and served a term as mayor of the town between 2008 and 2009. She was a feminist and writer. Hafina Clwyd died in 2011.
