Iolo ap Gwyn

Dr Iolo ap Gwynn was born in London, son of Harri Gwynn and Eirwen Gwynn (who was the first woman to gain a PhD in Physics from the University of Wales, Bangor). In 1950 the family moved to North Wales. Being brought up so close to nature gave him an early interest in nature, which eventually resulted in BSc and PhD degrees in zoology at Aberystwyth University. Living close to the mountains of Snowdonia, he also developed a love of mountains and mountaineering. He was a founder member and first chairman of The Welsh Mountaineering Club. He is currently a member of the Snowdonia National Park Authority and a member of the National Museum of Wales Board of Trustees. He is also currently Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth. Iolo ap Gwyn has retired from his post as Senior Lecturer in Zoology at the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences of Aberystwyth University.
