Welsh Learners receive a helping hand which sees four of Wales' publishers working together on a joint project

Y Lolfa is delighted to be part of the Llyfrau Amdani project, a project which sees the publication of a new exciting series of reading books especially aimed at adults learning Welsh. The first pack is published this week.

The Llyfrau Amdani project sees four Welsh publishers, Y Lolfa, Atebol, CAA and Gomer, working together to develop a series of books in conjunction with the National Centre for Learning Welsh and the Welsh Books Council.

There are six novels in the first pack. The novels have been graded carefully, with books suitable for learners at Entry, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced levels. The series coincides with the introduction of new Welsh for Adults courses from September 2018 onwards.

Meinir Wyn Edwards from Y Lolfa has adapted Margaret Johnson’s Big Hair Day from the English. Her Welsh veision, Am Ddiwrnod! tells the story of Sophia Reynolds, who gets work as an extra in a film with famous actor Fabio Facelli. But Sophia doesn’t have a good day! The novel is suitable for learners at Entry level, with a vocabulary list and a picture on every page to help learners on their path to learning and reading in Welsh.

‘Adapting the short novel was a challenge, but enjoyable as well. I have been adapting books for children for years but this was much more difficult, mainly because the vocabulary and language patterns – up to Unit 8 at Entry level – are so confined. But it’s also been a privilege to contribute to this important project. In order to develop confiedence whilst learning any language it’s important to have light reading material for enjoyment,’ said Meinir Wyn Edwards.

‘We’re delighted that these books are being offered on graded levels – this will certainly help increase confidence amongst learners,’ said Efa Gruffudd Jones, Chief Executive of the National Centre for Learning Welsh.

This series will fill a gap by giving Welsh learners a chance to enjoy reading books on a variety of current subjects and themes.

There will be four futher titles published in May 2018, with the series set to grow again by October 2018. The next in the series from Y Lolfa will be the biography of the poet, artist and presenter Siôn Tomos Owen Y Fawr a’r Fach: Straeon o’r Rhondda.
