Children's book to raise essential funds for Tŷ Hafan

Since opening in 1999 Tŷ Hafan, the charity that offers care and support to children and young people with shortened life expectancy, has supported over 850 children and their families. Juliet Bebbington, one of its volunteers, has written a warm and funny book to help fundraising for this important charity, with all the profits going towards the hospice.

A Dragon Called Môr tells the story of a lonely blue sea dragon, who is only seen by those who believe in dragons. The nosy little dragon goes to play with some of the children staying at Tŷ Hafan, where he also enjoys helping both the children and staff. As well as being humorous, the book shows the importance of being kind, to empathise and to be sensitive to other people’s needs, and most importantly, to show love. The book is divided into six short stories where Môr helps the children in specific situations such as a trip to the seaside, drying clothes, and music therapy.

Juliet Bebbington has volunteered at the hospice for over 20 years. She says:

“I’ve read and made up so many stories for the children at the hospice over the 20 years that I’ve been volunteering there. Despite the sad reasons for the existence of the hospice it is a happy place – the happiest place that I’ve ever worked at. There is a feeling of ‘carpe diem’ that belongs to the place. The hospice does such important work with the children and their families, I was very keen to raise money for them. It’s even more important now as all the fundraising has stopped since March this year due to Covid19. Tŷ Hafan isn’t part of the NHS but a charity, and it’s important to acknowledge the importance of the place and those who help run it.”

Tŷ Hafan is one of the UK’s leading palliative care charities and offers care to children from all over Wales. To ensure its free service the charity needs to raise £4.4 million every year.

“These are lovely and funny stories which children will love, as well as giving us a glimpse of just some of the amazing work Tŷ Hafan does,” said editor Meinir Wyn Edwards.

The book is a joint project between Y Lolfa and Tŷ Hafan, and there is a Welsh version available (Draig o’r Enw Môr). There are black and white illustrations to go with the text by Andrea Grealy. All profits from the sales will be donated to the hospice.
