Castles of Wales inspire popular Welsh artist

Popular Welsh artist Dorian Spencer Davies, known for his rich, full-colour style, has turned for inspiration to the iconic castles of Wales. But this time he has produced black and white illustrations for other people to enjoy colouring in. The images have all been hand-drawn in an original and vibrant style in a book that is suitable for all ages – from 4 years old upwards!

The Welsh Castles Colouring Book is a collection of beautiful, fun illustrations. The book features the outlines of 21 castles from every corner of Wales, from the defensive fortresses of the native Welsh princes, such as Criccieth, Dinefwr and Dolwyddelan, to invader Edward I’s notorious Ring of Iron, which includes castles such as Beaumaris, Conwy and Rhuddlan. At the front of the book is a list of the castles illustrated, with a little bit of information about the history of each one.

Much-loved and experienced artist Dorian Spencer Davies was born in Carmarthen, but grew up in Pembrokeshire. After many years as senior art editor on children’s books for Dorling Kindersley, he returned to his first love: painting. Now a full-time artist with over 50 exhibitions under his belt, he depicts the coast and landscape of Wales with his own unique colourful and curvy style. The artwork he is known for is heavily influenced by the sea and often features boats and harbour scenes, as well as recognisable local landmarks such as lighthouses and castles.

“I’ve had so many requests for a colouring book over the years, it’s brilliant to see it happening!” said Dorian Spencer Davies. “People come from all over Britain and even the world to see these impressive castles and learn more about them. I wanted to celebrate their splendour,” he continued. “This colouring book will give hours of pleasure. I’d like to follow it up with a book of Welsh harbour and seaside scenes next.”
