Mair Roberts

Mair Roberts (Colwyn's harpist) was born in the Old Colwyn and was a pupil in Penmaenrhos Welsh School and Abergele Grammar School. She started having harp lessons when she was 10 years old by the late Alwena Roberts. By the age of sixteen she had won the main harp competition at the National Eisteddfod 3 times. Mair Roberts was inaugurated to the blue gown in the Bards' Gorsedd whilst still in school. She studied at the Royal Institute in London after receiving a Rosa Harvey scholarship. Whilst at the Institute, she won the Julia Leney award for playing the harp. At nineteen she was appointed first harpist of the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, and after a while became first harpist to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She appeared as a soloist in a number of concerts and was often on the radio and television.
