Urien Wiliam

Originally from Swansea, Urien Wiliam was educated in Dinefwr Grammar School, Swansea and at Swansea University where he graduated in Welsh in 1950. In 1956 he graduated with a Master's degree with research carried out on the history of schools in Morgannwg and a Ph.D. from Liverpool University in 1963 on research carried out on Welsh-medium intelligence tests for children. He worked as a teacher at Pembroke Dock Grammar School, as a Research Fellow in Old Colwyn's Child Guidance Clinic and spent four years working as a lecturer in Trinity College, Carmarthen. From 1981 he was a full time author and translator. Winner of the 1972 and 1973 National Eisteddfod Drama Trophy, Urien was commissioned to write the drama 'Michal' for Wrexham National Eisteddfod (1978). He published two grammar books and several plays and novels including 'Y Llyw Olaf' and 'Y Pypedau', 'Cyffur Cariad' and 'Twyll Diderfyn', and had the honour of designing the television cartoon for the character created by the late Jennie Tomos - Wil Cwac Cwac. Occasionally he scripted radio programmes for children and adults. Urien Wiliam died in October 2006.
