What is it that drives so many Welsh exiles to return to their homeland? Family responsibilities or economic necessity? Love of the very land itself, nostalgia for days gone by, a longing for Welsh community life, or a more proactive desire to contribute to Wales' language struggle, culture or economy?
Or is there something even more mysterious at work – the indefinable sentiment summed up by the word "hiraeth"?
This book sets out to answer those questions, exploring the motivations of exiles returning to rediscover their roots in Wales.
The book is written in praise of Welshness, Welsh people and the Welsh way of life, but also in recognition of the need for these returning exiles to contribute to the economic, cultural and political challenges that Wales faces in the 21st century.
In his last book, In Search of Welshness, Daniels charted the ways in which exiles living in England preserve their Welsh identity. In this latest work he delves into the reasons many of them one day return:
"I'm Welsh and I want to be in Wales."
"Wales – the best country in the world."
