Introduction

WELCOME TO DINAS, the new publishing imprint of Y Lolfa. But why Dinas?

Dinas was established two years ago to support the publication of original and innovative books in Wales. The original aim was to encourage the publication of books that are "interesting and original and which enhance the variety of books published in Wales" - and this, indeed, is what has happened. Twenty books appeared during the first two years, including popular Welsh biographies, illustrated local histories, and self-help books.

The books already published were widely welcomed both by the media and by readers and some have been reprinted. They appear on this website and in both Lolfa and Dinas catalogues. They are widely available in shops and have been distributed in the normal way. The only difference is that with most titles the authors have partially subsidised the production costs when no grants are available.

It is not an imprint specially set up to attract author subsidy but is an integral part of the commercial setup of Y Lolfa, a leading, independent Welsh publishing company set up over 35 years ago. The company will need no introduction to anyone familiar with the Welsh books scene; it has a long track record of successful, innovative and sometimes controversial publishing. Alongside its publishing operation it offers a commercial print service, including four-colour printing and bookbinding. Y Lolfa employs twenty full-time staff, including five editors, graphic designers and a sales manager. The company owns several buildings in the centrally located village of Talybont in Ceredigion.

Dinas differs very little from normal Lolfa publishing. All publishing is a partnership between author and publisher and this is even more true of Dinas. The author participates fully in the publication process and co-operates with the press in the production, but most importantly, in the promotion and marketing of the book.

Dinas is a developing and growing imprint with more and more Welsh related books getting the thumbs up from authors and readers alike.

"I have found Dinas to be the most prompt, helpful and cooperative of all publishers to work with. Having worked internationally for Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, MacMillan, and Mary Glasgow Publications, and nationally for several other publishers, I have found Dinas to be the highest quality of all publishers in editing, attention to detail, layout, design and quality of printing."
Jim Wingate (the author of Dragon Wakes published by Dinas)
