£5.95 The editorial processEditorial costsThere are three options, of widely varying expense. Please note: no author, however experienced, should edit his own work. A separate editor always improves the work, even where the text is quite clean. OPTION A The author will himself be responsible for getting his manuscript edited by an editor of his acquaintance. The payment to the editor will be made by the author himself. This may be an inexpensive option, but Y Lolfa will have to be satisfied that the editor is fully qualified to do the work. It should be pointed out to the editor that he will be resposible for checking the page proofs as well as the original typescript. OPTION B The manuscript will be edited by the Welsh Books Council editorial service. Although the WBC does not subsidize publication of books in English, it does offer a subsidized editorial service for books in both languages. The WBC deals only with publishers, so an author cannot approach them directly. We would take care of the administrative work, but cannot guarantee that this option is availablable without first consulting the WBC. OPTION C Editing by an external freelance editor. We have a list of experienced editors that we use ourselves. They usually charge £10 - £12 an hour. The work would be done under our supervision. We would ask for an estimate of the fee beforehand, but editorial work is notoriously difficult to assess. The editor's final bill will be added to the final account to yourself. Please note that, because of the arrangement we have with the Welsh Books Council, Welsh language books have to be edited externally. Text Corrections Once a book has been edited, the editor's suggestions and corrections have to be incoroprated into the text. Futher work will arise on the page proofs. This work will be done internally by Y Lolfa, and will have to be charged. An estimate of the cost per page is noted on the attached leaflet. Obviously, if a freelance editor was willing to work on the disk himself, there would be no charge under this heading. In certain circumstances, the author himself could carry out text corrections, and again there would be no charge - but this is not normally advisable.
