A picture of Flann O'Riain

Flann O'Riain

Flann Ó Riain was born in Co Tipperary and was the creator of the 1960s television series for children Daithí Lacha, which was a comic strip shown one frame at a time on Telefís Éireann. He also developed another series called Rí Rá agus Ruaille Buaille and also wrote a weekly Where's That? column for The Irish Times in the 1980's. A lifelong Irish-language activist, Ó Riain resigned from Comhairle na Gaeilge (Irish Language Council) when the Government decided not to reopen Scoil Dún Chaoin (a decision that was later reversed). He spent a period in jail, after refusing to pay his television license in protest to RTÉ's neglect of the Irish language. Flann Ó Riain died in 2008.
